292 – The Name Tag Guy is Scott Ginsberg

Sep 15, 2023

Scott Ginsberg holds the world record for wearing a name tag longer than anyone else, and he was so committed to the record he got his name tag tattooed to his chest…that’s commitment. In his spare time, he has also written 50 books and 11 music albums.

I was fortunate to meet Scott in 2009 in Cairns when he was touring Australia.

When we met, he gave me his business card, which read, “Hello, my name is Scott’s Friend”, and on the back, it has ten philosophies he lives by.

It was so unique I still have it in my possession today, and I read it often.

Name Tag – A Social Experiment

Scott initially started wearing a name tag as a social experiment and an idea to pick up girls, and even though it failed, he did make some friends that night, so he kept the social experiment going.

Wearing a name tag made him feel seen because people knew his name.

His First Book

He wrote his first book as he was finishing college, and it was titled Hello My Name Is Scott, and it went viral. This was back in 2002, before social media. The success of his book led him to speaking engagements and consulting.

Networking

You must wear a name tag at networking events. You may feel dorky, but it doesn’t matter if you feel uncomfortable; it’s all about making others feel comfortable because they don’t have to try and remember your name.

Name tags make it much easier to talk with people.

You should CHALLENGE YOURSELF to be more approachable and make it part of your brand.

The Power Of A Good Business Card

A good business card is an underrated piece of marketing real estate, and you can use it for more than just providing your details.

Scott gave me his business card in 2009, and I kept it because on the back it has ten HELLO, my name is Philosophies. It’s brilliant!

Steal Scott’s Ideas

Scott has developed a game show where he gets together with his wife and a few friends, and they come up with some crazy fake product idea that will solve problems. They also develop fake commercials and a fake logo, but the goal of the exercise it to open their creative minds to other things they are working on.

If you share your ideas with other people, it will make the idea better in the long run because it keeps your mind working. You can check it out at Steal Scott’s Ideas

Monday Morning Tip

With every customer or client, you have to do something that makes the other person stop in their tracks and say, “You did this just for me”?

That is what people think and say when you’re generous, thoughtful, and you make a connection. It could be something as simple as the boss taking guacamole into work at lunchtime; if you can do it once per day, in various areas of your life, you’re set.
