334 – Unlocking Podiatric Knowledge Through Passion-Driven Research with Dr Ben Pearl

Aug 10, 2024

In this week’s episode, we dive deep into the niche areas of podiatry with our returning guest, Dr. Ben Pearl, a renowned sports podiatrist from Arlington Foot and Ankle in Virginia, USA. Together, we discuss the importance of conducting personal research in areas of podiatry that interest you.

If Ben’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he has previously been on episode 260, where we discussed the significance of having an ongoing thirst for knowledge, sharing and collaborating with peers, and going the extra mile in patient care.

In this episode, Ben and I explore his journey in research and writing and how these contribute to a deeper understanding of specific podiatry topics.

The Thirst for Knowledge

We start by recalling the essence of episode 260, where Ben shared his drive for continuous learning. He emphasises that podiatrists are often like Sherlock Holmes, constantly seeking new information and solutions for their patients. In this episode, we’re examining how this thirst for knowledge can shape a podiatrist’s niche and expertise.

Developing a Niche in Podiatry

Ben shares a successful story about developing a turf toe splint, a popular product on Amazon. He explains how his personal interest in soccer led him to research the mechanics of sports-related injuries, specifically turf toe. He delved into the history of Morton’s Extensions and arthritis in the big toe, discovering gaps in published literature. His collaborative research led to a practical solution that has benefitted many athletes.

For podiatrists listening or reading, it’s crucial to understand that research isn’t always about developing a product. Ben and I discuss the importance of exploring areas of personal interest, whether that’s writing articles, becoming knowledgeable about specific footwear, or understanding injury prevention. This deep dive into any niche can significantly enhance your expertise and benefit your patients.

Research Beyond Product Development

Ben stresses that his writing on soccer cleats wasn’t merely about creating a product. His extensive research on soccer boots involved understanding their history, current trends, and future directions. This knowledge has made him an authority in that niche, demonstrating the broad applications of informed research.

I echoed Ben’s sentiment, noting that every podiatrist should immerse themselves in an area of interest. Writing or speaking about your findings can elevate your status from author to authority, as Barry Block often says.

The Importance of Sharing Knowledge

We emphasise the importance of sharing your findings and opinions, even if it invites criticism. Constructive conversations with peers can lead to better practices and innovations.

Overcoming Professional Challenges

Ben and I delve into the challenges podiatrists face, including infiltrating other health professionals into traditionally podiatry-dominated spaces, like gait analysis. We urge podiatrists to remain relevant by continually updating their knowledge and sharing it through various platforms, whether it’s through writing, podcasts, or speaking engagements.

Promoting the Podiatry Profession

It’s vital for podiatrists to be vocal and visible to further the profession. Being active in various media can change public perception and invite more interest in the field.

Events and Continuous Learning

Ben discusses upcoming events like the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine’s standalone meeting in Columbus, Ohio, and their biomechanics summit. These events are instrumental for continuous professional development and networking.

Connecting for Future Growth

We conclude by encouraging podiatrists to reach out and connect with peers, share their experiences, and participate in events. The collective growth of our profession depends on the knowledge and contributions of each individual.

Stay curious, keep learning, and always strive to be more than what’s required.

The Power of Persuasion: The Mindsets, Strategies, and Tactics that Enhance Leadership Success and Profitability with Dave Frees

This LIVE one-day event with Dave Frees will be life-changing. It is rare to have this calibre of speaker in Australia, let alone Cairns, so I suggest doing whatever you can to attend. There are only a limited number of seats available, so I would not sit on the fence too long.
