409 – (From the Archive): Purpose, Values & Your Best Self with Dr David Weiman

Why I Brought This Episode Back

This conversation with psychologist Dr David Weiman was originally released in 2020 and quickly became one of the show’s most downloaded episodes. However, many of the newer listeners who have discovered the Podiatry Legends Podcast over the past few years may never have gone back that far.

That’s why I’ve decided to bring it back.

The topic we discuss in this episode is something that affects many podiatrists at some point in their careers: losing the excitement and passion they once had for the profession.

Meet My Guest – Dr Dave Weiman

Dr Dave Weiman is a psychologist and leadership consultant based in Pennsylvania. He works with business leaders and healthcare professionals, helping them improve leadership, build stronger teams, and create more fulfilling professional lives.

Dave has also worked with a number of podiatrists over the years, which makes his insights particularly relevant to our profession.

In this episode, we explore the psychology behind motivation, purpose, and why professionals sometimes reach a point where their work starts to feel routine.

When Podiatry Starts to Feel Routine

Many podiatrists begin their careers with enormous enthusiasm.

Opening the clinic door in the morning feels exciting. Helping patients walk without pain is incredibly rewarding. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities.

But over time, things can change.

The work can start to feel repetitive, the daily pressures increase, and the excitement that once drove you can slowly fade. According to Dave, this often happens when professionals drift away from three important things:

  • Their purpose

  • Their values

  • Their best self

When these three elements become disconnected from the way we work and live, even a successful career can start to feel flat.

The Problem with “Follow Your Passion”

One of the interesting points Dave raises in this conversation is the danger of oversimplified motivational advice.

You often hear people say things like:

“Follow your passion.”
“If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

While these ideas sound appealing, the reality is far more complicated. Passion isn’t something that stays constant throughout an entire career. Every profession has challenging periods, repetitive tasks, and moments where motivation drops.

The key isn’t necessarily abandoning your career when enthusiasm fades. Sometimes the real solution is reconnecting with the deeper reasons you chose the profession in the first place.

Rediscovering What Truly Energises You

One of the exercises Dave recommends is surprisingly simple. Think back to when you were a child and ask yourself:

What activities made you happiest?

Often, the things we loved doing as children reveal clues about what energises us as adults. For some people, it might have been building things, solving problems, helping others, creating music, writing stories, or making people laugh.

Those early interests can still influence what brings us satisfaction later in life.

Why Life Outside the Clinic Matters

Another key theme from this episode is the importance of having interests and activities outside of podiatry.

Many podiatrists become so focused on their clinics that work begins to dominate every part of their lives. Over time, this imbalance can lead to stress, frustration, and eventually burnout.

Dave explains that having hobbies, spending time with family, and creating space away from the clinic aren’t just enjoyable; they’re essential. Those experiences refill the tank and give you the energy needed to continue doing great work in your practice.

A Powerful Reminder About What Really Matters

During our conversation, Dave shared an interesting observation.

People can vividly recall the details of the happiest moments in their lives, including who was there, what the room smelled like, and how they felt at the time.

But when asked about the biggest cheque they’ve ever received, most people struggle to remember even the basic details.

It’s a powerful reminder that while financial success is important, the experiences and relationships in our lives are what truly matter in the long run.
