When Patricia Ting graduated from La Trobe University in 2019, she already had a clear vision. After gaining six years of work experience in Australia, she planned to return home to Malaysia and establish a private podiatry clinic. That vision became KL Foot Specialist Podiatry, one of only a handful of private podiatry clinics in a country of over 36 million people.
Her story is a perfect example of how preparation, determination, and a willingness to invest in quality can create extraordinary opportunities.
A Family of Healthcare Professionals
Patricia grew up in a medical family. Her mother is a retired GP, and her father is a paediatrician. And her two other siblings are also podiatrists.
Although medicine was an option, Patricia was drawn to podiatry because of its incredible variety. That diversity keeps the profession interesting and opens many career paths.
Six Years of Australian Experience
After university, Patricia worked in two private practices in Australia, one in a rural area and the other in a metropolitan setting.
This six-year period allowed her to:
- Build confidence as a clinician
- Treat a wide range of conditions
- Learn business systems
- Understand how successful clinics operate
She always intended to return to Malaysia, but she wanted enough practical experience to launch her own business with confidence.
Why Malaysia Needed More Podiatrists
Despite its large population, podiatry remains relatively unknown in Malaysia. Patricia estimates there are about five private podiatry clinics in the country.
This creates two significant challenges:
- Limited public awareness of what podiatrists do
- A need for extensive patient education
At the same time, it creates enormous opportunities for practitioners prepared to build awareness and establish trust.
Investing in Quality from Day One
One of the most impressive aspects of Patricia’s story is her commitment to setting up a professional clinic from the very beginning.
Rather than starting with minimal equipment, she invested immediately in:
- Shockwave therapy
- Laser therapy
- Treadmill gait analysis
- Plantar pressure scanning
These tools allow her to deliver highly detailed biomechanical assessments and provide patients with visual evidence that reinforces treatment recommendations.
It is a powerful reminder that first impressions matter.
Building Awareness Through Social Media
Because podiatry is still unfamiliar to many Malaysians, Patricia has embraced social media as an educational and marketing tool.
Her strategy includes:
- Instagram content
- Community presentations
- Networking with doctors
- Patient education
Her advice is simple and powerful:
“You just have to put yourself out there.”
For many practitioners, visibility is uncomfortable at first, but it is often the key to growth.
Choosing the Right Location
Patricia also made a strategic decision about where to open her clinic. Rather than locating near existing podiatrists, she chose a suburb on the opposite side of Kuala Lumpur where no other podiatry services were available.
This reduced competition and allowed her to establish herself as the local expert.
The Importance of Hiring the Right Receptionist
Initially, Patricia believed she could manage the clinic on her own. That changed quickly as bookings increased and the volume of calls and messages became overwhelming.
She waited patiently until she found the right receptionist, and she describes that decision as one of the best she made.
A great receptionist does far more than answer the phone. They improve the patient experience, keep the business organised, and free the podiatrist to focus on clinical care.
Why Malaysia Is an Attractive Place to Work
Patricia describes Malaysia as:
- Warm and tropical
- Multicultural
- English-speaking
- Affordable
- Food-rich and culturally vibrant
For podiatrists interested in international careers, Malaysia offers both professional opportunities and an exceptional lifestyle.
