422 – Learning from Other Professions with Dr Jesse Green

Oct 21, 2026

If you’re receiving all your business education and inspiration from within the podiatry profession, you could be missing out on some great opportunities. This episode is all about paying attention every day, looking outside the podiatry profession, and learning from other professions, businesses, and industries.

In this episode, pulled from the archives, I am joined by Dr Jesse Green, author of Retention – How to Plug the #1 Profit Leak in Your Dental Practice. Dr Jesse Green is also the owner of one of the most successful dental coaching companies in Australia, the Savvy Dentist, so his knowledge in all aspects of business is highly regarded and sought after.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Learning from other professions and why.
  • Why most health businesses are very similar, and why that can be a problem.
  • Asking yourself the question when you see another business doing something different: “How can I make that work for me and my business”?
  • We discuss Universal Studios and what a VIP service looks like.
  • Nothing Disney does happens by accident – therefore, learn from the masters who have been doing it for decades.
  • Boring Facebook Groups.
  • Making sure your business is talk-worthy.
  • It takes courage to make the changes you know you need.

And if you would like to view the UNCUT video of this episode when it was first recorded five years ago, back when I had hair, you’ll find it on my YouTube channel, Tyson E Franklin.

Boring Facebook Groups

On Facebook, every profession has multiple groups, and you’ll find most of them say the same thing and give the same advice. Very few step outside what is expected, and over time they become very vanilla.

I like to think my Facebook group, the Podiatry Business Owners Club, is a little different.

Is Your Business Talk-Worthy?

What do you do that makes people talk about your business when they leave? When patients are asked about their day, will their visit with you be talk-worthy, or was it not even note-worthy?

Is there something unique or different about your business that’s worth talking about? My podiatry business in Cairns had superhero-themed consultation rooms. They were fun, yet still professional.

 Love & Hate

When you visit other businesses, pay attention to what you love and what you hate. With what you love, can you make it work in your business? With what you hate, make sure you’re not doing it yourself.

Disneyland

If you’re going to look outside your industry, look at organisations that are very successful at what they do, such as Disneyland. Ask yourself, “What would Disney do”?

If you haven’t read it, both Jesse and I highly recommend Be Our Guest: Perfecting the Art of Customer Service.

It Takes Courage

If you’re a little apprehensive about making a change, that’s normal. It takes courage to make the changes you know you need. But you can always change back if it doesn’t work for you. Changes are never set in concrete.

“A good idea at the wrong time is still a bad idea” – Dr Jesse Green

Know Your WHY

It helps to keep reminding yourself why you’re doing what you do, because it’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day grind and lose sight of it.

The power of WHY – It’s the fuel that keeps you going
