440 – WHY PODIATRY MATTERS with Dr Savannah Santiago, DPM

Oct 6, 2026

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr Savannah Santiago, a third-year podiatric surgical resident and chief resident at Ascension St. Vincent’s in Indianapolis. She is completing her training under Dr Patrick DeHeer, and her enthusiasm for the profession is something I think every podiatrist needs to hear.

Savannah’s path into podiatry began with her own running injuries. As a university cross-country and track athlete who also lives with diabetes, she wanted a career that combined hands-on care, sports medicine, surgery and working with the diabetes community. Seeing a podiatrist helped her recognise that these interests could come together in one profession.

Looking beyond the presenting problem

We discuss why Savannah was drawn to a practitioner who looked at her as a whole person and investigated the factors behind her injuries. That experience continues to influence her approach to patients, particularly athletes who want to return to their sport and people navigating life with diabetes.

The impact you might never hear about

A conversation with a Trader Joe’s checkout assistant gave Savannah an unexpected reminder of podiatry’s value. The woman described the care podiatrists had provided for her late father. Savannah didn’t know whether he had been her patient, but hearing what that care meant to his family stayed with her.

Creating opportunities before you feel ready

As a fourth-year student, Savannah wrote six articles before approaching her professor about contributing to PRESENT. That preparation led to a weekly writing opportunity. She explains how she captures ideas and keeps articles in reserve for busier weeks.

Ambition and a life outside work

We also discuss professional involvement, social media and criticism of her outside interests. Savannah makes a strong case for having a life beyond medicine and offers an honest reminder that your online personality should match how you treat people in person.
