In this week’s episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I had the privilege of talking with Abid Ali, a musculoskeletal podiatrist from Coventry, UK. We discuss his unique journey from the safety and predictability of the NHS to the unpredictability of private practice. Abid is the owner of Biomechanix Clinic and also runs online courses for podiatrists.
From Sports Enthusiast to Podiatrist
Abid’s journey into podiatry was unexpected, yet it makes perfect sense when you look back. With a deep passion for sports like rugby, football, and martial arts, Abid sustained several injuries, including knee issues, that ultimately introduced him to podiatry. After receiving orthotics, his knee pain was resolved. That experience sold him on the power of biomechanics and set him on a path to become a podiatrist.
The Importance of Biomechanics in Podiatry
Biomechanics is at the core of Abid’s practice. After completing his studies, he pursued additional training in biomechanics, shadowed experienced podiatrists like Jonathan Small, and gained practical experience by working in both NHS and private settings.
Abid emphasises the importance of examining the entire body’s movement, not just the foot, when assessing a patient.
Abid’s approach is one of continuous learning, never settling for a “one-size-fits-all” solution. He encourages other podiatrists to embrace biomechanics, emphasising that it’s essential for treating patients holistically and making informed clinical decisions.
A Passion for Education and Mentorship
In addition to his clinical work, Abid is passionate about teaching and mentorship. He regularly runs courses for other podiatrists, focusing on practical biomechanics, orthotic prescription, and musculoskeletal examinations. Abid recognises that the next generation of podiatrists needs solid mentorship to truly excel, and he’s dedicated to providing ongoing support through his educational programs.
With the growth of his clinic, Abid is not only providing excellent care but also fostering a community of podiatrists who are committed to learning and continually improving their skills. His clinic’s growth is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and passion for the profession.
