Point-of-Care Ultrasound

May 16, 2025

In this week’s Podiatry Legends Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with James Ferrie, a sports and musculoskeletal podiatrist from My Sports Podiatry in Docklands, Victoria, to discuss point-of-care ultrasound and its benefits for our patients.

Whether you’re just starting out in practice or looking to enhance your existing clinic, this episode will give you the tools and knowledge to incorporate ultrasound into your diagnostic toolkit.

The Role of Point-of-Care Ultrasound in Podiatry:
Point-of-care ultrasound has emerged as a transformative technology for podiatrists. It allows us to visualise tissue, bone, and nerve structures in real time. As James explains, ultrasound serves as an extension of our clinical exam, helping us make more accurate diagnoses and, ultimately, improve patient care.

While traditional imaging techniques like MRI and X-rays have their place, they come with limitations in both accessibility and real-time feedback. Ultrasound allows podiatrists to examine patients in-office and get immediate feedback, which is essential for conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and even fractures.

Why Every Podiatrist Should Consider Ultrasound:
The real advantage of using point-of-care ultrasound is the ability to make clinical decisions on the spot. James shared his experience with cases where ultrasound has helped him rule out common diagnoses, like plantar fasciitis, and pinpoint other issues, such as stress fractures or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). With this tool, podiatrists can enhance their ability to diagnose and tailor treatments to individual patients, improving both patient satisfaction and outcomes.

Building Skills with Ultrasound:
While ultrasound machines are valuable, they require specialised training to use effectively. James emphasised that it’s not just about having the right equipment—it’s about acquiring the skills to interpret the images accurately. With courses designed explicitly for podiatrists, you can gain hands-on experience with the technology and improve your diagnostic abilities.
