Mark bought his first property at 19 while still studying and working part-time. He didn’t overthink it; he took action. That has been the common thread through his entire career. Whether it was investing in property or buying a vineyard on impulse, Mark’s superpower is execution.

As podiatrists and business owners, we can spend too much time analysing and second-guessing. Mark’s story reminds us to back ourselves. Sometimes you don’t need all the answers; you need to start.

The Power of Loyalty and Retention

Mark’s real estate business, McGill Group, doesn’t just chase new customers; it rewards loyalty. In fact, repeat clients get better pricing, not the other way around.

The same goes for his staff. His team is comprised of many working mothers, people often overlooked by other agencies. Instead of micromanaging, he empowers them with flexibility and trust. The result? High retention, great culture, and a thriving business.

If you’re a clinic owner, there’s a strong message here: when you look after your team and existing patients, everything else becomes easier.

Embracing Spontaneity Without Losing Strategy

Mark has a unique balance of spontaneity and calculated thinking. He says that when it comes to life, “You can’t plan a good time”; they happen unexpectedly. However, when it comes to business, you can plan, and he always has an exit strategy in place.

That mindset helped him launch accommodation in both Queensland and the Barossa Valley, as well as a boutique wine label McGill Wines, featuring litre-sized bottles!!!! I can vouch for the wines being fantastic.

As podiatrists, it’s okay to take risks if you’ve done your homework and built in a fallback. It might be a new service, an expansion, or even stepping back from the tools. Bold decisions, when grounded in values and informed by preparation, can yield remarkable results.

Final Thoughts

Mark’s story is inspiring because it’s real. He’s not just doing one thing; he’s doing business and life on his terms. For podiatrists who want more freedom, impact, and joy from their work, there’s a lot to learn here.
